Chapter two

In that spring the princess of the kingdom was born, and the whole country was boisterous about the baby girl. Even (n) parents took her to the capital to see the celebration around the streets. Walking around the busy streets holding her parents hands, she didn’t noticed a black bird that flied above her, with so much color and happiness who could notice it, anyway?

After that day, nothing was heard about the royal princess, there were rumors, some said that she was cursed to be the most ugly baby in the land, other said that the princess was kidnapped by the evil witch of the Moors (way to scare small kids, “if you don’t behave the witch of the Moors will get you like she did with the princess”) but the rumor that got propagated the most was that the baby princess died a few days after her christening.

As the years came by, king Stefan was losing his senses, and the lowborn were spreading the rumor that he went nuts after his daughter death.

In those years (n) mother got sick during the coolest winter the kingdom suffered, and so the family moved to the capital, during that time her father got back to work as a smith (the king was paranoid with having enough weapons or something), as the capital was expensive, the doctor’s bill, the rent and the food would also be, so the now teenager (n) got serious with her bow lesson (whenever her father got a moment from work and on her own), swordmanship or with daggers, and she began to use this knowledge for hunting and help the family economy by selling the fur or sometimes (if she hunted more than enough) she would trade them for vegetables or other necessities.

By the time her mother passed away she knew the woods as the palm of her hand, but she never got to close to the wall of thorns.

The queen Leila passed away in the spring of (n) sixteen birthdays, and in that year she went back to her old home, leaving her father to work in the capital, this way the money problem would be solved, she would hunt and cultivate some vegetables, enough to keep her and her father by.

One morning she got up before dawn, today was time to hunt and sell something in the market (and visits her father). She got up from her warm bed and got full dressed in her now normal (strange for the others) attire. And what make her attire weird for the other? The fact of a female wearing pants instead of a dress.

She put her gloves (that covered only her thumb, index and middle fingers, covering the mark she got some years ago) and her cloak (pulling the hood up), picked up the quiver and the bow, placing the first one by her left waist, as the other one holds the dagger; after closing the front door she did what she did every day since she got back, she breathed deeply, closed the eyes and squeezed the small sack holding the shining stone.

This time she decided to explore the west part of the forest, being the one she frequented the less, to close to the wall of thorns.

The sun was already set on the sky, warming the cold earth, when she perceived a shadow, big enough to be a baby deer, with that and the few rabbit that were already hanging dead on her back, she would make some good money.

The closer she got to the animal, the easier was shooting an arrow through its neck, fast, clean and no suffering. She slowly pulled the string, as her father taught her, and the moment she loosened it the deer run away, something got its attention and got away (but it couldn’t have been (n)). Instead, running to the place where the deer was, appeared a small blonde head, and the arrow was going to hit it.

By much, much luck, or magic, the arrow moved from its path, passing next to the small head, which turned to look at (n).

“Holly cows!”; (n) screamed when she first saw the child running straight to the arrow; she threw her bow and kneeled to inspect if the kid was hurt, but for her luck, the kid was completely perfect.

“Girl”; she began after pulling off the hood; “Where the hell did you came from??”; how could a little girl be in the woods so early in the morning AND alone?; to answer the question the little girl pointed to the direction she came, to which led (n) to her next question; “Where are your parents?”; and the kid smiled brightly at her; “What’s your name?”; (n) asked and the girl shyly looked at her with her fingers in her mouth and said; “Awora”; Awora? Was that even a real name?; “Aurora?”; (n) asked to confirm it and Aurora smiled brightly.

“Ok, Aurora, I’m going to take you home, because I don’t want to hunt you by mistake and had a talk with some irresponsible parents”; (n) said as she picked up Aurora forgetting about the deer.

Hidden from everybody but watching carefully the scene before they, were a woman with horns in her head and a staff with a green stone on it, and a male dressed all in black.

“That was a close one”; the man said; “Good you were here…”

The female said nothing and turned in direction of Aurora’s house.

“Where are you going?”; the male inquired.

“That girl seems like she will be interesting to observe”; and with a small move from her wrist the male turned into a black raven.

The male (now raven) couldn’t stop thinking where he heard before the “Holly cows!” the girl screamed, sooner or later he will end up remembering.
